Mortagne-sur-Gironde is a pretty fishing port cut into the limestone cliffs in the sunny Charente-Maritime. It has bakers, a butcher and small supermarket with bars and restaurants overlooking the boats. From Font Remy, it is a 20 minute walk or 5 minute cycle down a country lane through the vineyards to collect your croissants in the morning. And it is a lovely stroll down late morning for a long and lazy lunch by the water.

La Rochelle and Bordeaux airports are just over an hour away. By car the journey is 7 hours from Calais, 5 from Caen or St Malo. The bustling seaside resort of Royan is 20 minutes north.
